27 Killed in Head-On Collision Between Minibus and Truck in Zimbabwe

At least 27 people have died after a minibus carrying churchgoers collided head-on with a haulage truck near Chivhu in central Zimbabwe, in one of the country's latest deadly road crashes.

The accident occurred on Friday evening south of the capital, Harare, when a foreign-registered haulage truck reportedly collided with the minibus while overtaking another vehicle.

The minibus was carrying worshippers travelling to a church conference, according to police. Both vehicles had an unknown number of occupants.

Seven people were injured in the crash and were taken for medical attention, although authorities had not immediately provided further details on their condition.

Minibus Destroyed in Crash

Images broadcast by Zimbabwe's public broadcaster ZBC showed the extent of the destruction, with the minibus reduced to a charred wreck following the collision.

The truck came to a stop on the opposite side of the road after the impact.

Police have not yet provided a detailed account of what caused the collision beyond the preliminary information that the truck was overtaking another vehicle when the crash occurred.

Investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the overtaking manoeuvre and the events leading to the fatal collision.

Zimbabwe's Road Safety Challenge

The crash has once again drawn attention to Zimbabwe's road safety challenges, where fatal accidents remain a recurring concern.

Poor road conditions, dangerous driving practices and the heavy reliance on privately operated public transport have frequently been cited among the challenges facing motorists and passengers.

Privately operated minibuses, commonly known as kombis, are a major form of everyday transportation in Zimbabwe. However, the sector has also faced criticism over issues including passenger overloading and road safety compliance.

The latest tragedy adds to a series of serious road crashes recorded in the country in recent years.

In another major accident reported in August 2024, 30 people were killed and 36 others injured after a bus collided with a commuter minibus on the main highway connecting Harare and Bulawayo.

Authorities are expected to continue investigating the Chivhu crash as families and the wider community mourn those who lost their lives.
