57 Illegal Betting Machines Destroyed in Embu East Crackdown

EMBU, Kenya — More than 57 illegal betting machines confiscated from various parts of Embu East Sub-County have been destroyed following a security operation targeting unlicensed gambling activities in the area.

The machines were destroyed at the Runyenjes Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds after being seized during an operation conducted by the Embu East Security Committee.

Speaking before the destruction exercise, Embu County Commissioner Maurice Wanyonyi said the crackdown was aimed at enforcing betting regulations, curbing petty crime and addressing growing concerns over the involvement of children in gambling.

Wanyonyi said the operators of the confiscated machines did not possess licences issued by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB).

He further warned that premises where the machines were operated had increasingly become associated with criminal activity, raising concerns over their impact on communities.

The county commissioner said the enforcement operation was part of broader efforts by authorities to ensure compliance with betting regulations and protect vulnerable members of the community, particularly underage children.

Security Committee Commends Cooperation

Embu East Deputy County Commissioner Jane Waruinge, who chairs the local security committee, commended security officers, administrators and residents for their cooperation during the operation.

Waruinge said collaboration between authorities and members of the public was important in identifying and addressing illegal activities within the sub-county.

The destruction of the machines marks a further step in the government's efforts to crack down on unlicensed betting operations and limit their impact on communities.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring betting premises in Embu East to ensure operators comply with licensing requirements and other regulations governing gambling activities.
