Beijing 2027 World Athletics Championships Dates Adjusted to September 10–19

BEIJING, China — The 2027 World Athletics Championships will now take place from September 10 to 19, 2027, in Beijing after World Athletics approved a one-day adjustment to the original competition schedule.

The championships had initially been scheduled for September 11–19, but the revised dates will allow the opening ceremony to take place on September 10 alongside the first competition session.

The adjustment means athletes will have an evening competition session on each of the 10 days of the championships.

World Athletics will work with the local organising committee to develop the final competition timetable, which will subsequently require approval from the World Athletics Council.

Beijing Countdown Begins

The confirmation came as Beijing marked one year until the global athletics showpiece returns to the Chinese capital.

The 21st edition of the World Athletics Championships will bring the world’s leading athletes back to the iconic National Stadium, popularly known as the Bird’s Nest, 12 years after the venue hosted the 2015 World Championships.

More than 2,000 athletes from around 200 World Athletics member federations are expected to compete during the 10-day event.

The championships will once again place Beijing at the centre of the global athletics calendar, with athletes expected to compete across track and field disciplines at one of the sport’s most recognisable venues.

Beijing 2027 Unveils New Identity

The one-year countdown also featured the unveiling of Beijing 2027’s new visual identity, mascot and official slogan.

The event logo, named Jingyue, draws inspiration from Beijing’s Temple of Heaven and the Chinese character “jing”, which represents the city’s name.

Its design incorporates brushstroke elements and a multicoloured running track, reflecting both Beijing’s cultural identity and the diversity of athletics.

The championships’ mascot, Jingyan, takes inspiration from the swallow and pays tribute to the mascot used during the 2015 Beijing World Championships.

The concept symbolises the return of the global championships to Beijing after 12 years and incorporates traditional Chinese kite patterns, Peking Opera-inspired elements and lightning motifs.

‘Each Step Counts’

Beijing 2027 will be staged under the slogan “Each Step Counts”, a message focused on perseverance and the importance of every stage of an athlete’s journey.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe welcomed the preparations and thanked the local organising committee and the Chinese Athletics Association for their work towards delivering the championships.

The return to Beijing will evoke memories of the 2015 edition, which featured many of the sport’s biggest stars and memorable performances.
