CASCAIS, Portugal — Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time partner Georgina Rodriguez have married in a private ceremony in the Portuguese seaside resort of Cascais, representatives for the player said Tuesday.

The wedding marks the culmination of the couple's decade-long relationship and follows days of intense speculation in Portugal over the location and timing of the ceremony.

Ronaldo, 41, confirmed the marriage on Instagram by sharing a photograph of the couple's hands showing their wedding rings, accompanied by the caption “C (heart) G.”

The couple's five children attended the “private and intimate” ceremony, according to the Brunswick Group, which handles Ronaldo's public relations.

The wedding took place exactly one year after Rodriguez, 32, announced their engagement on Instagram.

Reports had suggested that the couple could marry in Sintra, outside Lisbon, or in Funchal, on the Atlantic island of Madeira, where Ronaldo was born.

Speculation that the ceremony would take place in Funchal last weekend attracted hundreds of people to the city's cathedral, with fans and onlookers hoping to catch a glimpse of the football star and his bride.

The cathedral had previously confirmed to AFP that no wedding ceremony for Ronaldo was scheduled there, although it said hosting such an event would have been “an honour”.

The couple ultimately chose Cascais, an affluent seaside resort approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of Lisbon, where they own a villa.

The private nature of the ceremony allowed the family to celebrate away from the crowds and intense attention that had surrounded the event.

Ronaldo's football legacy

Ronaldo remains one of the most decorated and recognisable footballers in the world.

The Portugal captain currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, following a career that included celebrated spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
