DCI Arrests Police Constable Linked to Lawyer Mathew Mbobu’s Murder

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a police officer suspected of involvement in the fatal shooting of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi.

In a statement dated September 24, 2026, the DCI said police Constable Julius Cheruiyot was arrested following an intensive investigation into the killing, which occurred on September 9, 2025.

According to detectives, the investigation led to the recovery of a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident.

Ballistic Evidence Links Firearm to Killing

The DCI said ballistic examination established that the recovered firearm was the weapon used in the killing of Mbobu.

“Through ballistic examination, the firearm was confirmed to be the firearm used to murder the lawyer,” the DCI said.

The findings form part of the evidence investigators have gathered during the year-long probe into the lawyer's death.

Mbobu was shot while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi.

Another Suspect Remains at Large

Investigators have also identified Inspector Kenneth Sang as a person they allege coordinated the operation.

Sang remains at large, according to the DCI.

Detectives further linked the alleged operation to Rose Mbithe, who is already in custody in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was killed in July 2026.

The DCI said investigations are continuing as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mbobu's killing and identify all individuals who may have participated.

DCI Vows to Pursue All Suspects

The investigative agency said it remains committed to pursuing everyone suspected of involvement in the murder, regardless of their position or affiliation.

The arrest of Cheruiyot marks a significant development in the investigation more than a year after Mbobu was killed.

The police constable remains in custody pending arraignment in court, where the allegations against him will be formally presented.

As the case proceeds, investigators are expected to continue pursuing other suspects, including those who remain at large, while the evidence gathered is subjected to the judicial process.
