KIAMBU, Kenya — A family in Inoorero Village, Kamunyaka, Gatundu North Constituency, Kiambu County, is reeling from shock after a decomposing body was discovered inside a well the household had been using as a source of water.

According to a police report seen by Citizen Digital, the grim discovery was made by Joseph Muriithi Kinyanjui while he was fetching water from the well.

Muriithi reportedly became suspicious after the bucket he was using became stuck on what appeared to be a heavy object at the bottom of the well.

He then used a torch to inspect the well and was shocked to see what appeared to be a decomposing human body.

The discovery prompted the family to alert police, who arrived at the scene alongside Kiambu County firefighters. The emergency teams assisted in retrieving the body from the well.

Police said the remains were identified as those of a woman, although her identity had not been established by the time of reporting.

The discovery has left the family struggling to understand how the body ended up inside the well, which they had been using for domestic water.

The circumstances surrounding the woman's death and how long her body had been in the well remain unclear.

The body was transported to General Kago Mortuary in Thika, where it is being held pending identification and further examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances that led to her body being found in the water source.

Authorities are also expected to conduct a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death as detectives continue their investigations.

Police have not indicated whether the incident is being treated as a suspected homicide or whether there are any persons of interest in the case.

Investigators are expected to rely on forensic examination, identification efforts and information from residents as they seek to establish what happened to the woman and how she came to be inside the well.
