Fire Destroys Dormitory Housing 340 Students at Hill School Eldoret

A dormitory housing 340 Form Three and Form Four students has been destroyed by fire at Hill School in Eldoret, with no injuries reported after the blaze broke out early Wednesday morning.

The fire reportedly started at around 5am while students were attending morning preparations, allowing them to evacuate safely.

Emergency responders moved to contain the blaze, with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) working alongside the Uasin Gishu County Coordinator, police officers, the county fire brigade and members of the surrounding community.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.

Students receive psychological support

Following the fire, the Kenya Red Cross Society said it had begun providing psychological support to affected students as emergency teams assess the impact of the incident.

A rapid needs assessment is also being conducted to establish the extent of the damage and determine the immediate assistance required.

The destruction of the dormitory is expected to disrupt accommodation arrangements for the affected students as the school administration and emergency agencies work on the next steps.

Rising concern over school fires

The incident comes amid renewed concern over fire outbreaks and unrest in Kenyan secondary schools.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has reported that at least 37 distinct school fires have been officially logged and responded to by emergency agencies since January, alongside a wider pattern of unrest reported in more than 100 institutions.

The latest incident is likely to renew calls for schools to strengthen fire-safety measures, emergency preparedness and student support systems.

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage at Hill School.
