JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — At least four people have been killed and three others injured after a gunman opened fire on mourners leaving a memorial service for a local politician in Katlehong township, South African police have confirmed.

The shooting occurred late Tuesday, with authorities initially reporting two fatalities at the scene. The death toll rose to four on Wednesday after two additional victims died in hospital.

Police said at least one of the injured people was a child. The suspect is in custody after reportedly turning himself in to authorities.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the incident is being investigated by its Political Killings Task Team, which handles cases involving suspected politically motivated violence.

Shooting Follows Memorial for Former Local ANC Leader

According to local media reports, the gathering was held in memory of a woman who served as a local leader within the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s largest party in Parliament.

The woman reportedly died earlier this month in a separate shooting suspected to have been politically motivated.

Some of those killed in the latest attack were reportedly members of the ANC Youth League. However, police had not immediately confirmed the identities of the victims or established a motive for the shooting.

Authorities described the gathering as a memorial service for a member of a political party and said investigations were continuing.

The circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether it was linked to the earlier killing, remain subject to investigation.

Political Violence Raises Security Concerns

The incident has renewed concerns about political violence in South Africa, where shootings linked to local political rivalries have been a persistent security challenge.

A report published earlier this month by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime identified 43 killings in South Africa during 2026 that were suspected to be politically motivated.

Such incidents have drawn attention to the risks faced by political activists, local officials and community figures, particularly in areas where competition for political influence and public resources can be intense.

Investigators will need to establish whether the Katlehong shooting was politically motivated or connected to other disputes.

The suspect’s arrest marks an important step in the investigation, but authorities have yet to publicly establish responsibility or explain the motive behind the attack.

South Africa Approaches Local Elections

The shooting comes as South Africa prepares for local elections scheduled for November 4, when voters are expected to decide which parties control municipal councils.

Municipal elections are significant because local governments oversee essential services, including water provision, sanitation, waste collection, local infrastructure and other community needs.

Political competition at this level can be intense, particularly in municipalities where parties are contesting control or where local leadership disputes remain unresolved.

Although the timing of the Katlehong attack has raised concerns about electoral security, investigators have not confirmed any connection between the shooting and the upcoming elections.

Ensuring the safety of political gatherings, community meetings and campaign activities will remain an important responsibility for law enforcement as the election period approaches.

Investigation Continues as Victims Await Identification

Police have not immediately released the identities of all the victims or provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the shooting.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances of the attack, gather witness statements and determine whether the suspect acted alone or had connections to others.

Authorities will also need to establish whether the incident was connected to the earlier death of the woman honoured at the memorial service.

For the affected families and the Katlehong community, the immediate concern remains the loss of life and the recovery of those injured.

The attack has also renewed calls for effective investigations into suspected political killings and stronger protection for communities affected by firearm violence.

As South Africa moves closer to its local elections, the case highlights the importance of ensuring that political disagreements are addressed through democratic processes rather than violence.
