Gabon Revives Festival of Cultures After Eight-Year Hiatus

Libreville has once again become a showcase of Gabon’s rich cultural heritage as the Festival of Cultures returns after an eight-year absence, bringing together traditions, languages, rituals, arts and craftsmanship from across the country.

The 15th edition of the festival is being held from August 21 to 23 along Avenue Jean-Paul II, bringing together representatives from Gabon’s nine provinces, as well as artists, artisans, cultural groups and visitors.

This year’s theme, “Reappropriation of our Cultural Values,” places particular emphasis on preserving Gabon’s traditions and ensuring they are passed on to younger generations.

Young Gabonese Rediscover Their Heritage

For many young visitors, the festival represents more than the revival of an established event. For those born after the previous edition, it is an opportunity to encounter elements of their cultural heritage that they may have rarely seen before.

One young visitor said the event offered a chance to discover traditional objects that have become increasingly difficult to find.

“It’s our heritage. Nowadays, it’s very old and very rare, because even at the National Museum, you can no longer find many of these objects,” the visitor said.

He stressed the importance of preserving traditional objects and practices, particularly those that are sometimes misunderstood.

“It has nothing to do with witchcraft. It’s about preserving our history, so that we have a record of it,” he said.

Another young participant described the festival as an opportunity to reconnect with Gabonese history and identity.

“We can rediscover our culture, our history and our heritage through this festival. It’s truly a wealth of knowledge being offered to us,” the visitor said.

Preserving Traditions for Future Generations

Traditional arts and crafts feature prominently across the festival grounds, alongside cultural performances, demonstrations and exhibitions.

For artisans, the event provides an important platform to showcase their work, interact with the public and promote traditional skills.

The programme also places strong emphasis on cultural transmission. Storytelling, traditional and contemporary dances, cultural demonstrations and other activities have been organised to introduce younger generations to the country's diverse heritage.

Organisers say the festival forms part of broader efforts to strengthen cultural identity and preserve traditions that face the risk of being forgotten.

The participation of all nine provinces also highlights Gabon’s cultural diversity, which organisers view as a source of national unity and cohesion.

Senegal Joins Celebration

The festival has also taken on a regional dimension this year, with Senegal participating as the guest country of honour.

A dedicated Senegalese cultural village showcases the country’s crafts, clothing, music and traditions, giving visitors an opportunity to explore cultural practices from beyond Gabon’s borders.

Senegalese artisans have demonstrated their skills and displayed objects made from materials including coconut, forest seeds and palm wood.

A Senegalese representative expressed gratitude to the Gabonese authorities for the invitation and the opportunity to participate in the 15th edition of the festival.

Senegal’s participation reflects the event’s wider ambition to use culture as a bridge connecting communities and countries.

A New Generation Takes Centre Stage

After an eight-year break, the return of the Festival of Cultures has restored an important public platform for Gabon’s cultural traditions.
