Gachagua Arrives in Kansas City for Kenyan Diaspora Engagements

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has arrived in Kansas City, Missouri, the latest stop on his extended United States tour, where he is scheduled to engage Kenyans living in the state.

Gachagua arrived in Kansas City on Friday, September 18, 2026, accompanied by his spouse, Rev. Dorcas Rigathi. He was received by members of the Kenyan community, with the welcome featuring traditional Kikuyu songs.

The reception marked the next phase of Gachagua's diaspora engagements, which have taken him to several American cities as he meets Kenyans living and working in the United States.

Kansas City follows Spokane and Portland

Kansas City is the third major stop on Gachagua's scheduled diaspora tour, following engagements in Spokane, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.

According to the itinerary released by the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua's formal diaspora engagements began in Spokane on September 4 and continued until September 10. He then moved to Portland, where he was scheduled to hold engagements from September 10 to September 16.

Kansas was listed as the next stop, running from September 16 to September 24.

In Spokane, Gachagua said his meetings with Kenyans abroad were intended to provide an opportunity to listen to their concerns, discuss issues affecting Kenya and explore how the diaspora can contribute to the country's development.

He also attended community gatherings during the Spokane leg of the tour.

Gachagua subsequently travelled to Portland, where he continued his interactions with members of the Kenyan community. His Oregon engagements included a golf tournament with Kenyans living in the area, which he attended alongside Dorcas.

Gachagua praises Kenyan diaspora

Following his arrival in Kansas City, Gachagua said the reception he has received from Kenyans during the US tour had encouraged him.

“The love and warmth I have received since beginning this tour are truly immeasurable,” Gachagua said.

He also praised Kenyans living abroad for maintaining their connection with Kenya despite being thousands of kilometres from home.

“I am inspired by the courage and unwavering commitment of Kenyans to keep the fire burning, no matter where they are in the world,” he said.

Gachagua has previously described his US tour as an opportunity to engage the diaspora, listen to their views and discuss Kenya's future.

Political and diaspora engagements

The tour comes as political activity in Kenya begins to build ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua's itinerary was released by DCP in August and covers five US locations. The former Deputy President is scheduled to travel from Kansas to Dallas, Texas, where he is expected to engage Kenyans from September 24 to October 1.

He will then proceed to Boston, Massachusetts, for the final leg of the tour, scheduled to run from October 1 to October 9.

The engagements have included community meetings, social gatherings and discussions involving Kenyans living in the United States.

While Gachagua has publicly framed the tour around diaspora engagement and discussions on Kenya's future, his US activities are also taking place against the backdrop of preparations for the 2027 political contest. Kenyan diaspora communities have increasingly become an important constituency in political outreach because of their economic, social and political links to the country.

Kansas City engagement continues

Gachagua's arrival in Kansas City is expected to be followed by further meetings with Kenyans in the area.

A community engagement listed for September 19 is scheduled to take place at the Matt Ross Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas, as part of his Kansas City visit.

The Kansas leg is expected to continue until September 24, when Gachagua is scheduled to move to Dallas.

His extended US tour is therefore set to continue for several more weeks, with further engagements planned before its conclusion in Boston on October 9.

For Gachagua, the tour provides a platform to maintain contact with Kenyans abroad and gather views from diaspora communities as he continues his political and public engagements ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
