Google’s Gemini Surpasses 1 Billion Monthly Users, Pichai Says

SAN FRANCISCO, August 12, 2026 — Google's artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for the technology giant as it intensifies efforts to compete in the rapidly expanding AI market.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on Tuesday, describing Gemini as the company's fastest-growing product.

“It’s our fastest growing product ever,” Pichai said, noting that Gemini has become the 14th Google product to reach 1 billion users.

Google said the figure is based on the number of people using the Gemini app across its ecosystem.

The milestone comes just a week after Google announced a major reorganisation of its artificial intelligence operations, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive market.

Google reshapes AI division

The user milestone provides a boost for Google as it restructures the division responsible for developing its Gemini models.

Demis Hassabis, the head of Google DeepMind and a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, recently stepped back from the laboratory's day-to-day management. Several prominent researchers have also departed, including Jeff Dean, a key figure in Google's engineering organisation for almost three decades.

The changes come as Google faces pressure to maintain its lead in artificial intelligence after rivals have made rapid advances in generative AI.

Google's next flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was initially expected to launch in June, has yet to be released.

Rival AI companies have meanwhile introduced models that have been viewed as more capable in areas such as computer coding, one of the most commercially valuable applications of generative AI.

Google leans on vast ecosystem

Despite the competition, Google's enormous existing user base remains a significant advantage.

The company has increasingly integrated artificial intelligence across its ecosystem, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.

That reach gives Gemini access to hundreds of millions of potential users who already rely on Google's services, allowing the company to promote AI features without having to build an audience entirely from scratch.

The latest milestone also highlights the different growth paths taken by Google and AI rivals such as OpenAI.

OpenAI said in July that it had reached 1 billion users across its interfaces, led by ChatGPT. The company did not specify whether that figure represented monthly or weekly users.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, launched as a free consumer application in November 2022, helped trigger the current generative AI boom and allowed the San Francisco-based company to build a global user base in less than four years.

AI competition intensifies

User numbers have become an increasingly important measure of the commercial strength of AI companies as they compete for consumers, businesses and investors.

OpenAI is also preparing for a potential initial public offering, having reportedly filed a confidential application in June. Its user growth and engagement metrics could play an important role in determining the company's valuation.

At the same time, competition is expanding beyond the two US technology companies.

China's DeepSeek and San Francisco-based Anthropic, the developer of Claude, have emerged as major competitors in AI assistants.

Research firm Sensor Tower, which estimates usage using company data, reported that ChatGPT's share of the AI assistant market fell below 50 per cent during the first half of the year, reflecting the growing competition.

For Google, Gemini's one-billion-monthly-user milestone demonstrates the strength of its distribution network. The challenge now is to convert that enormous audience into a sustained competitive advantage as AI companies race to develop increasingly capable models and expand their commercial applications.
