Torrential rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Senegal, submerging roads and disrupting transportation in parts of the capital Dakar and several other regions.
The Interior Ministry reported deaths and injuries linked to the flooding, while heavy rainfall also damaged buildings and infrastructure. In Matam, a 25-year-old woman and her four-year-old child died after a wall collapsed.
Senegal's meteorological agency, ANACIM, recorded 142 millimetres of rain over 24 hours in Rufisque and Ranerou, while Dakar's Yoff district received 138 millimetres during the same period.
Authorities Warn of More Rain
Senegalese authorities have warned that additional rainfall could worsen conditions in areas already affected by flooding.
Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo chaired an emergency meeting on Monday and ordered government agencies to strengthen monitoring and emergency response measures. The government said sensitive areas, including major roads and key public facilities, were being closely monitored.
Authorities are also assessing the impact of the flooding on transportation and the start of the new school year.
President Faye Offers Condolences
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed condolences to families affected by the floods and said the government was fully mobilised to strengthen vigilance in areas considered vulnerable.
The government has established additional monitoring mechanisms and instructed relevant agencies to support affected communities and maintain essential services.
The response comes as Senegal faces continued seasonal rainfall and the possibility of further flooding in the coming days.
Flooding Raises Concerns Ahead of Youth Olympics
The flooding comes less than four weeks before Senegal hosts the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics, scheduled to run from October 31 to November 13.
The event will be the first Olympic sporting event to be held in Africa. Senegalese authorities have been working on infrastructure, transport, water supply and other preparations ahead of the Games.
The recent flooding has placed additional attention on drainage, mobility and emergency preparedness in Dakar and surrounding areas.
Organisers and government agencies have already been coordinating on essential services, including water distribution, ahead of the event.
Government Mobilises Emergency Response
Senegal's government says emergency resources are being prepared to assist affected communities and respond to further rainfall.
Officials have urged residents in exposed areas to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions as weather conditions develop.
With the Youth Olympics approaching, the ability of authorities to manage the current flooding while maintaining preparations for the international sporting event will remain closely watched.
