Ilhan Omar Under Federal Investigation as Authorities Seize Phone and Subpoena Relatives
The Minnesota congresswoman faces scrutiny over alleged immigration paperwork irregularities and financial disclosures, while she denounces the investigation as politically motivated weeks before the US midterm elections.

US federal authorities have seized the phone of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar and issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including to some of her relatives, as part of an investigation into potential fraud involving immigration paperwork, according to a person familiar with the inquiry.
The latest developments follow a federal search of Omar’s Washington, DC, home on Monday, October 12, intensifying scrutiny of the Somali-born lawmaker just weeks before the November 2026 midterm elections, in which she is seeking re-election.
According to reporting by the Associated Press, the subpoenas were issued to support a grand jury investigation in Minnesota. Authorities have not publicly detailed the full scope of the inquiry, and the allegations have not been established in court.
The investigation has drawn national attention because of Omar’s political profile, her longstanding clashes with President Donald Trump and the timing of the law enforcement actions so close to the elections.
Immigration Paperwork Under Scrutiny
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has indicated that investigators are examining potential offences connected to immigration documents involving Omar and members of her family.
The precise allegations and evidence being examined remain unclear. Federal authorities have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud, and the investigation itself does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing.
The case is being pursued as investigators gather evidence through subpoenas and other legal procedures. It remains uncertain whether the inquiry will result in criminal charges or other legal action.
Separately, Washington, DC, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said on Tuesday that several investigations involving Omar were underway. Pirro also indicated that authorities were examining matters related to the congresswoman’s financial disclosures.
“If there was a crime that was committed, it will be prosecuted,” Pirro said in a Fox News interview, according to reports.
The relationship, if any, between the immigration inquiry and the financial-disclosure investigation has not been fully explained publicly.
Omar Denounces Investigation as Political Intimidation
Omar has strongly criticised the search of her home, describing it as an attempt to target political opponents and use federal law enforcement for political purposes.
In a statement posted on X, she said the action was the latest escalation in what she described as years of attacks against her by Trump.
“I will not be silenced,” Omar declared.
Democratic lawmakers also condemned the search, arguing that its timing raised questions about whether federal investigative powers were being used to influence the political environment ahead of the midterm elections.
The administration’s position and the full evidentiary basis for the investigation have not been publicly detailed enough to resolve the competing claims. The allegations of political motivation remain disputed, while the legal inquiry is ongoing.
Timing Raises Questions Ahead of Midterm Elections
The search took place less than a month before voters head to the polls in elections that will determine control of the US House of Representatives and Senate.
The timing has prompted renewed scrutiny because the Justice Department has historically sought to avoid investigative actions that could affect candidates close to an election. Such concerns do not, by themselves, establish that the search was politically motivated or legally improper.
Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis, and was first elected to Congress in 2018. She is among the progressive lawmakers commonly known as “The Squad,” a group that has frequently drawn criticism from Trump and Republican allies.
The investigation could therefore become a significant issue in an already politically charged election season, although its eventual legal and electoral consequences remain uncertain.
A Prominent Somali-American Lawmaker
Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee from Somalia and became a US citizen before entering national politics. She was one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress and the first Somali-American elected to the House of Representatives.
Her background and political positions have made her a prominent figure in debates over immigration, national identity and US foreign policy.
For now, the central question is what investigators can establish through the evidence they are collecting. Any determination of criminal responsibility would require the appropriate legal process, rather than conclusions drawn from the existence of an investigation alone.
As the November midterms approach, the case is likely to remain under close public scrutiny. Its progression will test the ability of law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations independently while addressing concerns about political neutrality and public confidence in the justice system.
