Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Joins Gachagua’s DCP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has officially left the Jubilee Party and joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), strengthening the party’s growing presence in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Hassan was formally welcomed into the party on Tuesday by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua at the party’s headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.

The legislator was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket during the 2022 General Election. In announcing his move, Hassan said he had chosen to join what he described as a forward-looking political movement committed to integrity, effective leadership and addressing the challenges facing Kenyans.

“Kenyans are hurting because of the high cost of living, and corruption has increased. Kamukunji residents have said they are tired and cannot bear the burden of bad politics,” Hassan said.

He praised Gachagua as a nationalist who, in his view, is committed to Kenya’s interests, saying the move marked the beginning of a political journey aimed at winning the next election and forming a new government.

“Gachagua is a nationalist who loves Kenya. And that is what makes a nation better. The journey has started until we win during the elections and create a new government,” he said.

DCP Strengthens Nairobi Presence

Hassan's move adds to a growing group of Nairobi lawmakers aligning themselves with the DCP as political parties position themselves for the 2027 elections.

Embakasi West MP Mark Muriithi Mwenje welcomed Hassan to the party, arguing that Nairobi has suffered from poor leadership and that the DCP has a plan to transform the city and the country.

“It has gotten to a point where we are tired of all this circus. Gachagua is the one to unite us all. We are now in a new beginning with a party that will take us forward,” Mwenje said.

He added that younger leaders in Nairobi were ready to mobilize support for the party across the capital.

“We are young and we have the energy to campaign for this party in Nairobi. We know this Nairobi and we will,” he said.

More MPs Back Hassan’s Move

Other Nairobi-area legislators also attended the event and expressed support for Hassan's decision to join the DCP.

They included Roysambu MP Kamande Mwafrika and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru, both of whom were elected to Parliament in 2022 on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) tickets.

The latest defections signal continued political realignment in Nairobi as parties and political leaders begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 General Election.

Hassan's departure from Jubilee also underscores the shifting alliances among lawmakers elected under different political parties in 2022, with the DCP seeking to expand its national footprint under Gachagua's leadership.

The party is expected to continue recruiting leaders and consolidating support in Nairobi and other parts of the country as the 2027 political contest takes shape.
