Kenya Met Forecasts Rainfall in 29 Counties, Warns of Strong Winds

Residents in 29 counties across Kenya have been advised to prepare for rainfall expected in some areas on Thursday, September 17, and Friday, September 18, 2026, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The weather service said rainfall is likely to occur in parts of Kericho, Kakamega, Nandi, Kisumu, Vihiga, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

Other counties included in the forecast are Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi.

Residents in the affected areas are expected to experience varying weather conditions, including sunny and cloudy intervals alongside episodes of rainfall.

Strong Winds Expected in Several Counties

Kenya Met has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds in parts of several counties during the two-day forecast period.

Winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 12.5 metres per second, are expected in parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Tana River.

Other counties likely to experience the strong winds include Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui.

Residents in areas affected by the strong winds have been urged to remain alert and take precautions, particularly when planning outdoor activities.

Localised Rainfall Expected

The forecast indicates that rainfall will mainly affect parts of the western, Rift Valley, central and coastal regions.

However, Kenya Met noted that the rainfall is expected to be localised, meaning weather conditions could vary significantly between different locations within the same county.

Residents have therefore been encouraged to monitor subsequent forecasts and weather advisories as they plan activities for Thursday and Friday.

Kenya Steps Up OND Rainfall Preparations

The latest weekly forecast comes as Kenya continues preparations for the October-December (OND) 2026 rainfall season.

Kenya Met has been issuing regular forecasts and advisories as part of efforts to strengthen early warning systems and help communities and other stakeholders prepare for possible weather-related hazards.

The meteorological service has urged Kenyans to use available weather information when making decisions aimed at protecting lives, property and livelihoods.

“As we prepare for the OND season, the window for preparedness is now. Use weather information to plan ahead, protect lives and livelihoods, and take action before hazards occur,” Kenya Met said.

The department's guidance underscores the importance of early preparation as the country approaches the main October-December rainfall season, with communities encouraged to remain alert to changing weather conditions.
