NOTTINGHAM, England — Young defender Okello Bartley has signed his first professional contract with English Premier League club Nottingham Forest, marking a significant milestone in his development through the club’s academy.

The 17-year-old has committed to a multi-year agreement that will keep him at the City Ground until at least June 2029, according to the club’s announcement reported on Friday.

Bartley, who was born in the United Kingdom to a Kenyan father and a British mother, is eligible to represent Kenya at senior international level if he chooses to commit his international future to the Harambee Stars. He has also represented England at youth level.

The defender joined Nottingham Forest’s pre-academy pathway at the age of seven and has spent approximately a decade developing within the club’s youth system.

His progress has continued with the Under-18 side, where he has been named in the starting line-up for all seven of the team’s fixtures so far this season.

Nottingham Forest’s head of academy, Chris McGuane, described the contract as recognition of Bartley’s hard work, consistency and commitment to his development. He also praised the teenager’s composure, defensive awareness and potential to progress within the club’s programme.

The professional deal represents an important step in Bartley’s career, although it does not automatically guarantee promotion to Forest’s senior first team.

For Kenyan football supporters, his progress will be worth following because of his eligibility to represent the national team. Any future decision on international allegiance, however, remains a matter for the player.

As Bartley begins the next stage of his professional development, continued progress in the academy and opportunities to gain senior experience will be important to his long-term prospects.
