Kenyan Primary School Pupil Named Africa Champion in Chinese Language Contest

A Kenyan primary school pupil who taught himself Chinese through digital platforms has been named Africa’s champion at the sixth annual Chinese Bridge Chinese Show for Foreign Primary School Students.

Wanjiru Ethan Noah secured the continental title after representing Africa in the international Chinese-language competition, earning an opportunity to compete against other regional champions in the global finale.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan, Ethan's journey began without formal classroom instruction. Driven by curiosity, he and his brother, Ebrahim Matthew, used online platforms including YouTube and Facebook to teach themselves Chinese.

From online learning to international competition

The brothers took their first formal step in their Chinese-language journey three years ago when they sat for the HSK Level 1 examination, an internationally recognised standardised test of Chinese-language proficiency.

They undertook the examination at the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University, where their performance attracted the attention of educators.

Impressed by the brothers' progress, teachers provided additional learning materials and mentorship as they continued developing their language skills and preparing for higher-level examinations.

Their dedication eventually led educators to recommend them for the Chinese Bridge competition. The brothers were subsequently accompanied to China for the international finals.

Zheng He story earns continental title

During the competition, Ethan delivered a presentation about the historical voyages of Zheng He, the renowned Chinese explorer and diplomat who travelled extensively across the Indian Ocean in the 15th century.

His presentation focused on Zheng He's voyages to the East African coast, highlighting the historical links between China and the region.

The performance helped Ethan emerge as the leading contestant representing Africa at the competition.

His achievement places him among five regional champions worldwide who will proceed to the final stage of the global competition.

A milestone for language learning

Ethan's achievement highlights the growing role of digital platforms in language education and the opportunities available to young learners beyond traditional classroom settings.

His journey from independently learning Chinese online to representing Africa at an international competition also demonstrates the potential of structured mentorship to build on skills developed through self-directed learning.

Ethan will now prepare for the global finale, where he will compete against the other regional champions for the overall title.

His success has also drawn attention to the cultural and educational links between Kenya and China, particularly through language-learning programmes and institutions such as the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University.
