Niger’s military government has accused Chad of carrying out a drone strike that killed two civilians and wounded others in northern Niger, escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries. Niamey has demanded compensation, an end to what it describes as hostile actions, and an independent international investigation.

In a statement broadcast on national television on Monday, Niger’s authorities said they had summoned Chad’s ambassador following the alleged attack.

The government said the strike occurred early Saturday at Salvador Pass in the mountainous Emi Lulu area of northern Niger. It described the incident as an “act of aggression” and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Chad had not provided a response in the information available at the time of the announcement, and the allegations had not been independently verified.

Niger Demands Compensation and International Inquiry

Following the incident, Niger’s authorities called for an immediate halt to what they termed hostile actions and demanded compensation for the damage caused by the strike.

The government also said it intended to refer the matter to the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council.

Niamey called for an independent international investigation to establish the circumstances of the attack and determine responsibility. It also appealed to its international partners for solidarity.

The diplomatic measures signal growing concern within Niger’s military government over the alleged strike and its potential implications for regional security.

Strategic Location in Northern Niger

Salvador Pass lies in a remote mountainous area near Niger’s borders with Algeria and Libya.

The surrounding region is known for mining activity and is also used as a route for smuggling and militant movements. Its difficult terrain and distance from major population centres present challenges for security forces operating in the area.

Niger’s government accused Chad of supporting mercenaries and targeting civilians and strategic infrastructure. These claims have not been independently established.

The reported civilian deaths have added to concerns about security in a region where armed activity and cross-border movements complicate efforts to maintain stability.

Niger Also Alleges French Involvement

In its statement, Niamey alleged that the drone strike was carried out with French support.

Niger has severed ties with its former colonial ruler, France, and relations between the two countries have deteriorated since the military took power.

The latest accusation also follows an earlier dispute in September, when Niger accused Chad of involvement in an alleged foiled mutiny and claimed France was backing efforts to destabilise the military government.

The allegations concerning Chad and France remain claims made by Niger’s authorities. Further evidence or independent findings would be needed to establish whether either country was involved in the reported strike.

Regional Tensions Raise Security Concerns

The latest dispute comes amid broader security challenges across the Sahel, where armed groups, political instability and strained relations between governments have complicated regional cooperation.

Niger, Chad and neighbouring countries face threats linked to militant activity and cross-border criminal networks. Diplomatic coordination among regional governments is an important factor in responding to those challenges.

An escalation between Niamey and N’Djamena could add further pressure to regional relations, particularly if the allegations lead to additional diplomatic or security measures.

For now, Niger’s demands for compensation and an international investigation place the focus on whether the incident can be independently examined and addressed through diplomatic channels.
