One person has been killed and five others injured, three of them seriously, following a series of shootings in the suburbs south-west of Paris, France, as authorities investigate the incident as a suspected terrorist crime.
The attacks occurred on Friday morning in Trappes and nearby La Verrière. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the shooting spree lasted approximately 15 minutes.
The suspected gunman has been arrested, but investigators have yet to establish a definitive motive for the attack.
France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) said the case was being investigated on suspicion of murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, among other potential offences.
Speaking to reporters in Trappes, Nuñez described the incident as a terrorist crime, referring to the prosecutor’s assessment.
Suspect Allegedly Fired at People From a Vehicle
According to Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh, the suspect drove through several neighbourhoods in a grey Renault Clio, allegedly firing at people he encountered along the way.
The locations reportedly affected included a petrol station, a medical centre, a playground and several vehicles. The suspect then continued towards nearby La Verrière, where he was eventually detained, according to reports from local authorities and media.
Witness accounts described the gunman firing intermittently from the vehicle as he travelled along a major road.
A local police official told French broadcaster BFMTV that the suspect had used an older-style semi-automatic firearm. Authorities are also investigating a suspected weapons offence involving a Category A weapon, a classification that includes certain military-grade and other heavily restricted firearms.
Twelve YearOld Among the Injured
One of the most disturbing aspects of the attack is the injury of a 12-year-old girl, whose mother told French broadcaster RTL that the child had suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery.
The mother questioned whether her daughter had been targeted because she was wearing a headscarf, raising concerns about a possible religious or racial motive.
Mayor Rabeh also suggested the attack may have had a racist or Islamophobic dimension. However, investigators have not publicly established that the shootings were motivated by religious or racial hatred.
The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office urged caution regarding the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Nevertheless, the list of suspected offences includes an aggravating circumstance relating to acts allegedly committed because of a victim’s actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion.
Anti-Terrorism Investigation Underway
The PNAT investigation includes suspected murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, conspiracy with a terrorist group to prepare crimes against persons, and possession of a Category A weapon.
French media have reported that the 39-year-old suspect was previously known to police but was not known to intelligence services. He was reportedly not listed among individuals considered a serious threat to French national security.
These details have not, by themselves, established the suspect’s motive or confirmed any connection to a terrorist organisation.
Investigators are expected to examine the suspect’s background, the weapon allegedly used, the sequence of shootings and any evidence that could explain the attack.
Authorities Seek Answers Over Motive
The shootings have raised renewed concerns about public safety and the protection of residents in the affected communities.
While officials are investigating possible terrorism and racial or religious aggravation, the precise motive remains unclear. The allegations will need to be established through the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
The condition of the three seriously injured victims, including the 12-year-old girl, remains a key concern as authorities continue their inquiries.
