Rironi-Naivasha Road Dualling Set for October 30 Completion, Chirchir Says

NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has announced that the ongoing dualling of the Rironi-Naivasha section of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway is expected to be completed and opened to traffic by October 30.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir gave the timeline on Wednesday following a development tour in Bomet County.

“By October 30, from Rironi to Naivasha, we will have completed the dualling and opened the road to traffic,” Chirchir said.

The CS said construction would then continue along the Naivasha-Nakuru section before progressing to the escarpment stretch beginning at Kamandura.

“We will afterwards continue constructing the Naivasha-Nakuru section, as well as the escarpment section from Kamandura,” he added.

KSh184 Billion Highway Project

The dualling forms part of a wider KSh184 billion road project aimed at easing congestion, improving road safety and enhancing transport connectivity along one of Kenya’s busiest highways.

The two-phase project was launched by President William Ruto in November 2025.

Under the first phase, the A8 road will run from Rironi through Naivasha to Gilgil, while the A8 South road will connect Rironi through Mai Mahiu to Naivasha.

The second phase will extend the highway from Gilgil through Nakuru to Mau Summit.

The project is being implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International in partnership with Kenya’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Highway to Expand to Six Lanes

The planned upgrade will significantly increase the road’s capacity along sections experiencing heavy traffic.

From Rironi, the highway will be constructed as a four-lane dual carriageway extending to Naivasha.

The Naivasha-Nakuru section, which experiences some of the highest traffic volumes along the corridor, will be expanded to six lanes in each direction to accommodate increasing commercial and passenger traffic.

In Nakuru town, the project will include an elevated section designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion through the urban centre.

Focus on the Nairobi-Nakuru Transport Corridor

The Nairobi-Nakuru corridor is a major transport route linking the capital to western Kenya, the Rift Valley and neighbouring countries.

Completion of the Rironi-Naivasha section is expected to improve journey times and road safety while providing additional capacity for motorists and heavy commercial vehicles.

The government’s next focus will be the Naivasha-Nakuru and Kamandura escarpment sections as work progresses on the broader highway expansion project.
