Tanzania Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi Resigns From Office and Active Politics

Tanzania's Vice President, Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has resigned from office and announced his withdrawal from active politics, with his departure set to take effect on September 4, 2026.

In a public notice dated August 25 and issued by the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma, Nchimbi formally informed President Samia Suluhu Hassan of his decision to leave public service.

Nchimbi cited Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, provisions that allow the President to appoint a new Vice President without triggering a fresh election.

Nchimbi Says He Is Fulfilling His Promise

In his resignation notice, Nchimbi said his decision followed a personal commitment he made to President Hassan to serve with “utter faithfulness” and leave office whenever she considered a change necessary.

“I am fully satisfied, without any doubt, that Her Excellency the President desires change, and thus I have decided to fulfil my promise,” Nchimbi said.

He expressed gratitude to President Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for entrusting him with the country's second-highest office.

Although he is stepping away from active politics, Nchimbi said he would continue serving Tanzania as a patriotic citizen.

His resignation comes at a significant moment in the country's political landscape and leaves President Hassan with the constitutional responsibility of selecting his successor.

Long Political Career

Nchimbi, born on December 24, 1971, in Mbeya Region, has spent decades in Tanzania's political and public administration system.

He entered active politics through CCM's youth wing, UVCCM, and became its chairman in 1998 while working at the National Environment Management Council.

In 2005, he was elected Member of Parliament for Songea Town after securing 67.6 percent of the vote.

A year later, then-President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him Deputy Minister for Information, Culture and Sports, marking the beginning of a long career in government.

Nchimbi subsequently served as Deputy Minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development and Deputy Minister for Defence and National Service.

He later became Minister for Information, Culture and Sports before being appointed Minister for Home Affairs, a position he held from May 2012 until December 2013.

Parliamentary and Academic Career

Nchimbi retained his Songea Town parliamentary seat in the 2010 General Election after defeating his CHADEMA opponent with 59.9 percent of the vote.

Alongside his political career, he pursued further academic qualifications, earning a Master of Business Administration in Banking and Finance before completing a PhD at Mzumbe University.

His resignation now marks the end of a political career spanning more than two decades and several senior government positions.

President to Appoint Successor

Under the constitutional provisions cited in his resignation notice, President Hassan can appoint a new Vice President without requiring a fresh election.

Nchimbi's departure is therefore expected to trigger a leadership transition at the country's highest level of government, with attention now turning to who President Hassan will select to serve as her deputy.

For Nchimbi, the resignation marks a voluntary exit from both public office and active politics. He has nevertheless pledged to remain committed to Tanzania's interests as a citizen.

His departure brings to a close a lengthy political journey that saw him rise from CCM's youth leadership to Parliament, several ministerial positions and ultimately the Vice Presidency.
