Kathmandu, Nepal — A glacial collapse and subsequent debris flow caused the catastrophic flooding and destruction that struck the Nepal-Tibet border this week, rather than an earthquake as initially believed, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said Thursday.
The clarification comes after torrents of water, mud and debris swept through communities on both sides of the border on Wednesday, killing at least 160 people and leaving hundreds missing.
The disaster has devastated settlements along river valleys in northern Nepal and areas of Tibet, with rescue teams continuing to search for survivors and assess the full extent of the damage.
USGS Revises Initial Earthquake Assessment
In its initial assessment, the USGS reported seismic activity near the Nepal-China border and classified the event as an earthquake.
However, further analysis of seismic monitoring data and satellite imagery led the agency to revise its conclusion.
The USGS said a seismic event recorded near the border at 8:37 a.m. local time on August 26 was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
Further analysis indicated that the seismic signal was instead generated by a glacial collapse and debris flow.
The agency said the event produced catastrophic downstream impacts but concluded that no earthquake had occurred.
Disaster Sweeps Across Border
The glacial collapse unleashed enormous quantities of water and debris into downstream areas, producing destructive flooding across the mountainous border region.
In Nepal, floodwaters surged through communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, sweeping away homes, vehicles and infrastructure.
Across the border in Tibet, authorities also reported severe destruction from the sudden flow of mud and debris.
At least 160 people have been confirmed dead, while hundreds remain missing on both sides of the border.
The number of missing includes foreign tourists and other international visitors travelling through the region.
Initial Theories Pointed to Earthquake
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the exact cause was unclear.
Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal initially suggested that an earthquake may have triggered a landslide, which then blocked a river and caused water to surge downstream.
Other possible explanations included a glacial lake outburst flood, in which a natural barrier holding back glacial meltwater collapses, or an ice avalanche.
The USGS assessment has now shifted the focus firmly towards a glacial collapse and debris flow as the trigger for the disaster.
Growing Concern Over Himalayan Glacial Hazards
The findings have renewed concerns about the increasing risks posed by unstable glaciers and rapidly changing conditions in the Himalayas.
Glacial collapses and related debris flows can release enormous amounts of water and sediment in a matter of minutes, giving communities downstream little time to respond.
The latest disaster highlights the vulnerability of settlements, transport routes and tourism corridors located along rivers originating in the Himalayan mountains.
Search for Missing Continues
Rescue teams remain engaged in a difficult search for people reported missing after the floods.
Operations have been hampered by damaged roads, landslides, heavy mud and difficult mountainous terrain.
Authorities in Nepal and Tibet are also working to establish more accurate casualty and missing-person figures as teams reach previously inaccessible areas.
With the cause of the disaster now clearer, attention is turning to the urgent humanitarian response and the broader question of how communities across the Himalayas can prepare for increasingly dangerous glacial hazards.
