Wanted Suspect Arrested After Violent Clash With Police in Busia

Police in Busia County have arrested a 36-year-old man who allegedly attacked officers with a panga during an attempt to apprehend him in Butula.

The incident occurred when officers from Bumala Police Station joined colleagues at Murumba Police Post to assist in the arrest of the suspect, identified as Stephen Ouma Okinda.

Suspect Had Previously Evaded Arrest

According to police, Okinda had been wanted following an alleged assault on his father.

Officers had reportedly attempted to arrest him on September 23 but were unable to do so after he allegedly confronted them while armed with a panga and issued threats.

Police later mounted another operation to locate and apprehend him.

Officer Injured During Confrontation

When officers located Okinda, police said he resisted arrest and attacked them with the panga.

Police Constable Voustine Atinya was seriously injured during the confrontation, sustaining two deep cuts to the left side of his head, according to the police account.

The injured officer was taken for medical attention as the operation continued.

Police Rifle Damaged

During the struggle, police said Okinda also struck a G3 rifle being carried by one of the officers, damaging it and splitting it into two pieces.

Officers subsequently used force to bring the confrontation under control and arrest the suspect.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Okinda was eventually subdued and taken to Bumala Police Station, where he remained in custody pending further investigations and legal proceedings.

Police said he is expected to face multiple charges arising from the alleged assault on his father, resistance to arrest and the confrontation with officers.

Authorities have not indicated the outcome of any court proceedings against the suspect. The allegations against him will therefore be subject to the legal process.

The incident highlights the risks faced by police officers during attempts to arrest suspects accused of violent offences.
