Keringet, Kenya – Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has praised triple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon for her decision to build a maternity facility in her hometown of Keringet, describing the initiative as a powerful example of leadership and community impact beyond the track.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Kipchoge said Kipyegon’s project reflects a shift from personal achievement to collective progress, noting that true success lies in transforming lives at the grassroots level.
“I think today is a great day for the community of Keringet, where Faith was born. They have realized that creating an impact in society is not being won by breaking records or winning medals or races but through creating an impact that is going directly to the community,” Kipchoge said.
Addressing Maternal Healthcare Challenges
Kipchoge highlighted maternal healthcare as a critical challenge in the area, commending Kipyegon for identifying and responding to a pressing community need.
“Faith thinking of maternity as a mother is a great and critical issue because in this place there is no maternity and yet women are giving birth and there are still deaths. I am here to give her full support,” he added.
The maternity facility is expected to provide safer childbirth conditions for expectant mothers who currently travel long distances to access healthcare services, helping reduce maternal and infant mortality risks in the region.
Athletes as Agents of Change
Kipchoge emphasized that Kipyegon’s initiative demonstrates the responsibility elite athletes carry to uplift their communities, using their platforms to address social challenges.
According to him, the project stands as a reminder that sporting excellence should translate into lasting social impact, particularly in underserved communities.
A Growing Role for Kenyan Athletes
Kipyegon’s maternity project adds to a growing trend of Kenyan athletes driving development initiatives beyond their sporting careers. Her intervention is positioned as a meaningful contribution to families in Keringet and surrounding areas, reinforcing the idea that champions can inspire change both on and off the field.
