Brasília, Brazil – Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to an intensive care unit after being diagnosed with bronchopneumonia, according to a medical statement released by DF Star Hospital.
The 70-year-old former leader was taken to the hospital early Friday after experiencing a high fever, chills and a drop in oxygen saturation, doctors said. Medical staff confirmed he is currently receiving treatment with antibiotics and remains under close observation.
One of the physicians overseeing his care, Dr. Brasil Caiado, told reporters in Brasília that Bolsonaro’s condition is serious and he is expected to remain hospitalised for several days. However, doctors have ruled out the need for surgery at this stage.
Ongoing Health Concerns
Bolsonaro, who served as Brazil’s president from 2019 to 2022, has experienced multiple health complications in recent years, many linked to injuries sustained during a knife attack at a campaign rally in 2018.
Since that incident, he has undergone several surgeries and hospital treatments. Earlier this year he was hospitalised for medical tests after a fall that resulted in a head injury. In December, he also underwent procedures to treat a hernia and persistent hiccups.
Legal Situation
The former president is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of plotting a coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. The vote was won by his political rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether Bolsonaro’s hospitalisation will affect the conditions of his detention while he undergoes treatment.
