Former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame narrowly avoided a serious accident on Sunday morning while traveling along the Kapsabet-Chavakali road in Vihiga County.

Kigame reported that an Easy Coach bus, allegedly speeding, attempted to overtake another vehicle at around 5:00 am, forcing his driver to swerve off the road to avoid a head-on collision. In a statement on his X account, Kigame criticized both the transport company and authorities for their role in the incident.

“Easy Coach, you wanted to kill us this morning. You come with full lights aiming at us and you drive us into the ditch. Shame on you as a company, shame on your drivers, Vihiga County, the Kenya Highways Authority, and the NTSA. If it was not God, I would be dead meat together with my friends here,” he stated.

Kigame further faulted the Vihiga County government, the Kenya Highways Authority, and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for allowing that section of the road at Shiru to remain in poor condition. He also expressed gratitude to Mr. Manasseh Kijo and his team, who assisted him and his companions out of the ditch.

According to Kigame, he was traveling to deliver a speech at the University of Eldoret when the incident occurred.

This near-miss highlights ongoing concerns over road safety and the condition of key highways in Kenya, particularly on busy routes like the Kapsabet-Chavakali road. Authorities and transport companies have continued to face scrutiny over driver conduct and road maintenance.
