Nairobi, Kenya – Roots Party of Kenya leader Prof. George Wajackoyah has announced that he will begin his 2027 presidential campaign after observing a six-month mourning period for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away in October 2025.

Speaking on Ramogi TV’s mid-morning show “Mbaka Oromo” on Monday, Wajackoyah reflected on his relationship with Odinga and outlined his political plans for the upcoming General Election.

“I will start my presidential campaign after my six months of mourning Baba Raila Amolo Odinga,” Wajackoyah declared, paying tribute to the veteran politician who shaped Kenya’s political landscape for over four decades.

Respect for Raila’s Legacy

Wajackoyah acknowledged the profound influence Odinga had on his political journey.

“I learnt a lot from the late Raila Odinga,” he said, noting the mutual respect between them despite pursuing different political paths.

He explained his decision to stay out of the broad-based government formed after the pact between Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s administration, saying Raila respected his choice.

“When everyone was getting into the broad-based government, I told Baba that I will not board the train and he respected that,” Wajackoyah said.

Distancing from Opposition Coalitions

The Roots Party leader also distanced himself from the current opposition coalition calling itself the United Opposition, criticizing its focus on personality-driven politics.

“The reason I do not move around with those who call themselves United Opposition is that what they are discussing is not valuable to Kenya. I cannot be talking about Ruto every time. It is Ruto against my policies. He is my competitor,” he stated.

2027 Presidential Bid

With characteristic confidence, Wajackoyah positioned himself as a serious contender in the next election.

“As I sit here, I am the one Ruto knows will be vying in the next election,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to one of his most controversial policy positions the legalization of marijuana for medicinal and commercial use which was a centerpiece of his 2022 campaign.

“I support the use of marijuana that is used for medicinal value and any other commercial use. I will still use it in my manifesto come 2027,” he stated.

Raila’s Passing

Raila Odinga, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing medical treatment in Kerala, India. His death marked the end of an era in Kenyan politics, leaving a significant void in the opposition movement.

Conclusion

Prof. Wajackoyah’s announcement signals the start of a new political chapter as Kenya heads toward the 2027 elections. By honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy while charting his own path, Wajackoyah is positioning himself as a distinctive voice in the country’s evolving political landscape.
