A 24-year-old British man is among 19 people who died in a tragic bus crash in Nepal’s Dhading district early Monday morning, police have confirmed.

The Incident

The bus, carrying 44 passengers including tourists, was travelling from Pokhara to the capital Kathmandu when it lost control in rainy conditions and plunged 200 metres onto the bank of the Trishuli River.

Police spokesman Abinarayan Kafle said 17 people died at the scene, while two more succumbed to injuries during treatment. At least 25 passengers were injured, including a Chinese national and a New Zealander, all of whom have been taken to hospitals in Kathmandu.

Investigation Underway

Authorities say they are investigating the cause of the crash. The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment regarding the British victim.

Nepalese police have so far identified nine of those killed, with efforts continuing to confirm the identities of the remaining victims.

Context

Pokhara, a popular tourist destination, is a common starting point for travellers heading to Kathmandu. Road accidents are frequent in Nepal due to challenging terrain, poor road conditions, and unpredictable weather.

Conclusion

The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Nepal, particularly for tourist transport routes. As investigations continue, families of the victims await answers while the nation mourns the loss of life in one of its worst transport accidents in recent months.
