British billionaire and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has paid a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Joan Templeman, following the announcement of her death at the age of 80. Branson confirmed the news late Tuesday via Instagram, saying he was “heartbroken” by the loss that has deeply shaken the family.

While he did not disclose the cause of death, Branson noted in a follow-up blog post that Templeman had recently been recovering from a back injury in a hospital in England. Reflecting on their life together, he described their decades-long partnership as “fifty incredible years of memories.”

“Years filled with tears and laughter, kindness, and a love that shaped our family more than words could ever capture,” he wrote. “It was a relationship that worked. We just had lots of laughs. We were very lucky.”

Branson said the entire family including their children, Holly and Sam, and several grandchildren is “devastated” by the loss.

The couple’s love story began in London in 1976, where Branson has often said he fell in love with Templeman at first sight. They married 13 years later on Necker Island, the Caribbean paradise Branson purchased in the late 1970s for $180,000. The island became their family home for decades.

Despite her proximity to one of the world’s most recognisable business figures, Templeman largely stayed away from public life. Branson repeatedly described her as a “down-to-earth Scottish lady” and a “very private person” who rarely gave interviews.

In his tribute, Branson highlighted her generosity, warmth, and unwavering support: “She lived so fully and joyfully, always thinking of others, always lifting everyone else up.”

Her passing marks the end of a remarkable partnership that shaped both Branson’s personal life and the Virgin empire’s history.
