Just 12 days before kickoff, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been postponed, leaving teams, players, and fans in uncertainty. Originally scheduled to take place in Morocco from 17 March to 3 April, the tournament will now be held from 25 July to 16 August, during the European summer, according to the Confederation of African Football.

CAF cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the change but did not elaborate further. The decision aims to ensure the success of what the organisation called “this important women’s competition.” It remains unclear whether Morocco will retain hosting rights for the tournament, which would have been its third consecutive time hosting.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four semi-finalists automatically qualify for the global tournament, while quarter-final losers were to have a second chance through intercontinental play-offs.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe had previously ruled out postponement, highlighting the competition’s importance for women’s football in Africa. The latest rescheduling, however, disrupts preparations for players who had paused their professional and personal commitments to focus on training for the event.

The delay also leaves teams without matches during the international break, creating another setback for women’s football on the continent. Observers and fans have voiced concerns about CAF’s commitment to the growth and promotion of the women’s game, especially in light of recurring organisational challenges.

As the new July–August dates approach, teams and supporters now face an extended period of preparation and uncertainty, with hopes that the tournament will proceed smoothly and uphold its role in shaping the future of African women’s football.
