At least 20 people have been killed in a multiple-vehicle road crash along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Nigeria’s north-central Plateau State, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The crash occurred at about 3:32 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, shortly after Sopp Water Falls, according to FRSC Public Education Officer Osondu Ohaeri.

Four vehicles were involved in the collision: a truck, a Toyota Corolla, a passenger bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle.

The FRSC said preliminary findings indicated that brake failure followed by loss of control were the likely causes of the crash. Authorities have directed a further investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Five People Injured

According to the FRSC, 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 23 males and two females.

Five people, three males and two females sustained injuries, while 20 male victims died.

The injured were evacuated to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for medical treatment, while the bodies of those who died were taken to the mortuary at Jos University Teaching Hospital.

FRSC rescue personnel also cleared the obstruction caused by the crash and restored traffic along the affected section of the highway.

Investigation Underway

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed condolences to the families and associates of the victims and directed the agency's crash investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry.

The investigation is expected to examine the reported brake failure and subsequent loss of control.

The FRSC also urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to prioritise vehicle roadworthiness, regular maintenance, speed management and responsible driving.

Road Safety Remains a Major Concern

The Plateau crash has renewed attention on road safety in Nigeria, where traffic collisions continue to cause significant loss of life.

Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics maintains quarterly road transport data, including statistics on road traffic crashes and fatalities. Its Q1 2026 Road Transport Report is among the agency's published datasets.

The latest incident highlights the importance of vehicle maintenance and mechanical checks, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles operating on major highways.

For the families affected by the Plateau crash, however, the figures represent individual lives and communities dealing with the consequences of a single road tragedy.
