Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his public criticism of the match referee after Egypt’s 2-3 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16.
The sanctions also affect Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan, Hossam’s brother, who has received a three-match suspension. Forward Mostafa Zico has been handed a five-match ban after allegedly insulting the referee during a post-match interview.
The disciplinary decisions have prompted the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) to seek clarification from FIFA before deciding whether to challenge the sanctions.
Hassan Accuses Referee of Costing Egypt a Place in the Quarter-Finals
The suspensions follow Egypt’s narrow defeat to Argentina, which ended the North African side’s World Cup campaign.
Following the match, Hossam Hassan accused the officiating team of making mistakes that affected the outcome. He said Egypt had been “cheated” out of a place in the quarter-finals and criticised the use of video assistant referee (VAR) technology.
His remarks sparked controversy, with FIFA subsequently imposing a three-match suspension on the Egyptian coach.
Zico also came under disciplinary scrutiny after reportedly insulting the referee during a post-match interview, resulting in a five-match ban.
Ibrahim Hassan Also Hit by FIFA Sanctions
Ibrahim Hassan, who serves as director of Egypt’s national team, has also been suspended for three matches.
The sanctions represent a setback for Egypt’s technical and administrative leadership as the team prepares for upcoming international fixtures.
The Egyptian Football Association has confirmed that it has requested an explanation from FIFA regarding the disciplinary decisions. The federation will determine whether to lodge an appeal after reviewing the governing body’s response.
Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Could Be Affected
If the suspensions remain in force, Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan will miss Egypt’s November Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Malawi.
The absence of the two officials could disrupt preparations and match-day leadership as Egypt looks to maintain its competitive momentum following the World Cup campaign.
Zico’s five-match suspension would also limit his availability for the national team during the period covered by the sanction, depending on the applicable competition and disciplinary rules.
Egypt Awaits FIFA’s Response
The Egyptian Football Association’s next steps will depend on FIFA’s explanation and whether the federation believes there are sufficient grounds to appeal.
The case highlights the disciplinary consequences that can follow public criticism of match officials, particularly at major international tournaments.
For Egypt, attention now shifts to resolving the dispute and preparing for upcoming fixtures while awaiting further developments in the FIFA disciplinary process.
