Russia Releases American Retired Teacher Stephen Hubbard After Four Years in Detention

The release marks a diplomatic development amid continuing tensions between Washington, Moscow and Kyiv.

Russia has released 74-year-old American citizen Stephen Hubbard after holding him in custody for more than four years over allegations that he fought alongside Ukrainian forces.

The release was announced on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg.

US President Donald Trump had reportedly asked Putin to release Hubbard, a retired teacher from Michigan who was captured in Ukraine in 2022.

Witkoff thanked Putin for the release during their meeting, while Trump confirmed that Hubbard was on his way home to reunite with his family.

Hubbard Was Sentenced in 2024

Hubbard was arrested in the Ukrainian city of Izyum in April 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian prosecutors accused him of joining a Ukrainian territorial defence unit and participating in military operations against Russian forces. He was subsequently sentenced to six years and 10 months in prison following a closed trial in October 2024.

The United States had designated Hubbard as wrongfully detained. His family also questioned the allegations against him and disputed accounts suggesting he had voluntarily fought for Ukraine.

His release ends more than four years of detention and follows renewed direct engagement between the US and Russian leadership.

Trump’s Request and US-Russia Engagement

Trump had reportedly raised Hubbard’s case directly with Putin, urging the Russian leader to allow the retired teacher to return home.

The release coincided with Witkoff’s visit to St. Petersburg, where he met Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine and ongoing efforts to negotiate a settlement.

The development provides a concrete outcome from renewed diplomatic contact between Washington and Moscow. However, neither the release nor the meeting alone establishes that the two sides have reached an agreement on the wider conflict.

Hubbard’s release was reported as a unilateral decision rather than part of a formal prisoner exchange.

Ukraine Peace Efforts Remain Uncertain

The talks come as Trump continues to push for an end to the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Washington has sought to bring Moscow and Kyiv towards negotiations, but major disagreements over territory, security guarantees and the terms of any settlement continue to complicate diplomatic efforts.

Relations between Washington and Kyiv have also faced strain over the US administration’s approach to negotiations and the concessions required to secure an agreement.

Fighting continues despite renewed diplomatic engagement, and there is no confirmed comprehensive peace deal.

A Diplomatic Development, but No Wider Breakthrough

Hubbard’s release is a significant development for his family and for US efforts to secure the freedom of Americans detained in Russia.

It also demonstrates that direct engagement between senior US and Russian officials can produce specific outcomes, even while broader disputes remain unresolved.

For now, attention will remain on the next stage of negotiations over Ukraine and whether renewed diplomatic contacts can produce progress towards ending the war.
