Mali's army has entered the strategic northern city of Kidal after Tuareg separatists announced their withdrawal from the city as government forces advanced.

A Malian military officer told AFP that troops had arrived in Kidal ahead of schedule, with a second military source confirming their entry.

The development represents a significant shift in control of the city, which was captured by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and allied jihadists during a wave of attacks in April.

Military Launches Operations in Kidal Region

Mali's military said it had launched large-scale air and ground operations in the Kidal region with what it described as its Russian partners.

In a statement, the military said the operations were aimed at combating armed groups, destroying their positions and restoring security and freedom of movement for civilians.

The announcement came as the FLA confirmed that it was withdrawing its forces from Kidal.

The separatist movement described the move as a “strategic and controlled withdrawal.” Reuters reported that the FLA said the decision followed airstrikes carried out by the Malian military with Russian support.

FLA Says Withdrawal Is Strategic

The FLA has presented its departure from Kidal as a tactical and temporary measure rather than an abandonment of its broader political objectives.

The movement said its decision was influenced by concerns over the safety of civilians and the need to preserve its personnel and logistical capabilities.

The withdrawal reportedly took place as Malian forces and their Russian partners increased military activity around the city.

Kidal Has Symbolic Importance

Kidal holds major strategic and political significance in Mali's long-running conflict with Tuareg separatist movements.

Malian forces, supported by Wagner personnel, previously retook Kidal from insurgents in November 2023. That operation had been presented by the country's military authorities as a major achievement.

The FLA and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked armed group, subsequently seized the city again during coordinated attacks in April 2026. The attacks also resulted in the death of Mali's defence minister, according to Reuters.

The army's return to Kidal therefore represents an important symbolic development for Mali's military authorities.

Mali's Prolonged Security Crisis

Mali has faced a severe security crisis for more than a decade, involving jihadist groups, separatist movements and criminal networks.

The country has also undergone major political changes since military coups in 2020 and 2021 brought the current military authorities to power.

The junta has increasingly relied on Russian security support after relations with traditional Western partners deteriorated. Russia's Africa Corps, which includes former Wagner personnel, has continued to provide security assistance to Mali.

Despite repeated military operations, armed groups continue to pose a significant security challenge across northern and central Mali.

What Comes Next for Kidal?

The return of government forces to Kidal could provide a significant political boost to Mali's transitional authorities, but maintaining control of the city may prove more difficult than taking it.

The FLA has indicated that its withdrawal does not amount to an end to its political objectives, while jihadist groups remain active in parts of northern Mali.

The latest development therefore marks another major shift in control of Kidal, but the broader conflict in northern Mali remains unresolved.
