Dr Oburu Oginga has built a political career spanning several decades, moving through local government, national Parliament, economic policy and regional representation before becoming a central figure in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

According to records from the Parliament of Kenya, Oginga was elected a councillor in Kisumu Municipality between 1974 and 1979. He subsequently worked as an economist in the Ministry of Planning and National Development from 1981 to 1994.

His academic background includes economics studies at People's Friendship University in Moscow, where he obtained bachelor's, master's and doctoral qualifications in economics.

The Bondo Years

Oginga entered national electoral politics as the Member of Parliament for Bondo, a position he held from 1994 to 2013, according to Parliament's official records.

His parliamentary career also saw him take on responsibilities within government, including serving as an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Finance.

The Bondo political base would become an important part of the wider Odinga family's political history. His younger brother, the late Raila Odinga, also represented Bondo before moving into national opposition politics and later serving as Kenya's Prime Minister.

ODM and the 2013 Parliament

Oginga remained active in national politics as Kenya entered the post-2010 constitutional era.

In 2013, he returned to the National Assembly as a nominated Member of Parliament. Parliament records list his tenure from 2013 to 2017.

His political affiliation during this period was associated with the Orange Democratic Movement, which had emerged as one of Kenya's major political parties.

Regional Politics at the East African Legislative Assembly

Between 2018 and 2022, Oginga served as a Member and Commissioner of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), taking his political experience beyond Kenya's national institutions and into the regional East African framework.

The role placed him within an institution responsible for representing regional interests and participating in the legislative affairs of the East African Community.

Return to the Senate

Oginga returned to frontline elective politics in 2022 when he became Senator for Siaya County.

His Senate role marked another stage in a political career that had already included representation in the National Assembly and regional service through EALA.

In 2026, he became increasingly prominent within ODM after assuming the position of party leader. ODM's official leadership profile currently identifies him as both Party Leader and Senator for Siaya County.

Taking the ODM Leadership

Oginga's elevation to the ODM party leadership came after the death of his brother, Raila Amolo Odinga, and marked a new phase for a party that had been closely associated with Raila's political leadership for many years.

As party leader, Oginga has been involved in efforts to maintain party structures and coordinate ODM's political activities.

In May 2026, he announced that he would seek to defend his Siaya Senate seat in the 2027 General Election rather than pursue a possible presidential bid that had previously been discussed. Kenya News Agency reported that he said his immediate focus was strengthening ODM's grassroots structures and the party's organisation in its traditional areas of support.

A Political Career Shaped by the Odinga Legacy

Oburu Oginga's political journey has developed alongside one of Kenya's most prominent political families.

His father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, was Kenya's first Vice-President and a major figure in the country's independence and opposition politics. His brother Raila Odinga later became one of Kenya's most prominent opposition leaders and served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013.

Oburu's own career, however, has included distinct roles in economic management, parliamentary politics, local government, regional institutions and party leadership.

His current position places him at the centre of ODM's post-Raila political transition, while his decision to defend the Siaya Senate seat means his political career remains closely tied to both the county and the national party landscape.

Looking Ahead

As Kenya moves toward the 2027 General Election, Oburu Oginga's political role will continue to be shaped by two responsibilities: representing Siaya in the Senate and leading ODM.

Recent reporting indicates that the Siaya Senate contest is already attracting political interest, with other figures expressing interest in the seat. Oginga has nevertheless publicly stated his intention to defend the position.

From a councillor in Kisumu to a longtime Bondo legislator, economist, regional parliamentarian, senator and national party leader, Oburu Oginga's career reflects a lengthy evolution through Kenya's changing political institutions.
