Ruto Expresses Shock Over Poor Road Condition in Wundanyi

President William Ruto has expressed concern over the condition of a road in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County, after visiting the area and finding the route in a condition he said differed significantly from the briefing he had received.

Ruto was in Wundanyi on Saturday to lay the foundation stone for Wumingu Technical and Vocational College, a public institution located in Wundanyi Constituency.

During the visit, the President reacted strongly to the state of the road, exclaiming “Salala!” and “balaa kubwa” as he assessed the condition of the route.

Ruto promises action within one month

The President said he had been informed that the road was in good condition but that his visit had presented a different picture.

He subsequently pledged that the government would move to address the problem, saying funds would be secured, a contractor identified and construction works commenced within one month.

The commitment comes amid concerns over road infrastructure in parts of Taita Taveta, where poor road conditions have affected transportation and access to essential services.

Road infrastructure remains a focus in Taita Taveta

The government has previously identified road development in the county as part of its infrastructure programme.

In April, the State Department for Roads said work was progressing on the 55-kilometre Mto Mwagodi–Dawida–Mbale–Wundanyi–Bura Junction Road, describing it as an important route for improving mobility and supporting economic activity in the region.

Wumingu Technical and Vocational College, meanwhile, is a government-established public TVET institution located about 10 kilometres north of Wundanyi town. The college offers programmes including ICT, electrical engineering, mechatronics and social work.

Ruto's latest commitment places renewed attention on road connectivity in Wundanyi, with residents expected to watch for implementation of the promised funding, contractor appointment and commencement of works.
