Authorities have launched an investigation following the theft of firearms and ammunition from Maguguni Patrol Base in Thika East Sub-County during the early hours of Tuesday, October 29, 2025.
According to an official police report, the incident was first discovered by Corporal Simon Cheboi, who was on duty at the night report office. Around 4 a.m., Cheboi reportedly heard dogs barking near the patrol base and the adjacent A.I.P.C.A. Church, prompting him to step out for a routine patrol. Upon returning, he noticed that one of the iron sheets covering the armoury had been tampered with.
Further inspection revealed that the padlock to the armoury door appeared to have been interfered with, and the steel storage box containing weapons had been opened. Several firearms and rounds of ammunition were missing.
Missing Weapons and Ammunition
The stolen items include:
- One AK-47 rifle with two fully loaded magazines (60 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition)
- One G3 rifle with a loaded magazine (20 rounds), two empty magazines, and an additional 96 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition
Senior police officers, including the Thika East Sub-County Police Commander and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, visited the scene to oversee the initial inquiry. Crime Scene Investigators from Thika West also documented the area for forensic analysis.
Suspicious Circumstances
Preliminary investigations have raised suspicions due to the lack of visible forced entry. Both armoury padlocks were found intact, suggesting that the theft may have involved individuals with access or knowledge of the premises.
“A search party was deployed to recover the stolen arms and ammunition. Preliminary investigations revealed there was no breaking, and the two armoury padlocks were intact and not broken,” the police report noted.
Corporal Cheboi has since been detained to assist detectives with ongoing investigations as police intensify efforts to trace the stolen weapons and identify those responsible.
